Course description:

Learn to make your own colours from earth, plants, and stones.

This course gives students an introduction to traditional painting materials: from learning about colour theory, to grinding and preparing pigments and dyes from stones and plants, to exploring the different binders for traditional techniques such as egg tempera, miniature painting, and illumination. This course provides instruction that has applications in many different media.

From learning about the history and symbolism of materials, grinding and preparing pigments for the formulation of a range of traditional recipes central to egg tempera and watercolour, students will appreciate the importance of this careful preparation to the great master painters of the 14th to 17th centuries. Pigments relevant to the Persian and Mughal schools of painting and illumination will be included and the European egg tempera painting tradition will be introduced.
