MARQUETRY: MAKING PATTERNS IN WOOD
Course Description
Create a beautiful panel that could hang on your wall or become an inset for a table top or a box lid. Participants will use a chisel to hand cut very thin veneers into geometric shapes following patterns selected from the monuments of Pakistan.
You will learn how to identify and choose different types of wood and how to work effectively and creatively with the all-natural colour palette and patterns of grain offered by the various woods. The individual shapes will then be fitted together, glued down and finished to create your own unique and organically beautiful pattern in real wood.

ILLUMINATION: OTTOMAN DESIGNS
Course Description
This is an introductory course on the art of Ottoman Illumination. Students will be introduced to the motifs and vocabulary of this art form, how these motifs are used to create compositions and some floral painting techniques. Through this course they will be able to understand the basic principles and process of the art of illumination, practically experience this art form and understand its historical significance.

BUILDING THREE DIMENSIONS
Course Description
Explore pattern, structure and proportion in three dimensions – an excellent opportunity for budding architects and designers!
The Platonic Solids are a unique group of 3-D forms that have fascinated mathematicians, scientists and artists world-wide since ancient times. They not only relate to forms in the natural world, they also inspire traditional architecture and design.

Construct a Traditional Geometry Pattern a Day
Course Description
Explore Pakistan’s rich decorative heritage through drawing and painting a geometric artwork using the traditional tools of a ruler and compass. Each day will start with a new pattern, where you will be shown how to construct and develop a pattern before experimenting with a simple colour palette to paint your own masterpiece.

Ancient Colour Palette
Course Description
Traditional earth and mineral pigments were seen as sacred and used in painting dating back to antiquity in all traditions throughout the world. Todays over 80% of artists palette is made of up of cheaper, vivid synthetic colours. Under expert tuition, participants will make their own water colour set containing of the four primordial colours of black, red, yellow and white. Once the paints have been made, participants will learn how these colours can be mixed to create a variety of harmonious colours to be creative with.

Ceramic Satrangi Kashikari Painted Tiles Workshop
Course Description
This is a Traditional technique of ceramic tiles painting, in this technique mostly is used White Earthenware clay body, the painting process is done with black oil-based outline and having colored glazes painting inside the motifs. In this course students will have slideshow presentation about the course, further will be taught about patterns development on paper, transferring motifs on tiles, outline of motifs with oil-based outline material, painting colored glazes on the surface of tiles. Exploring Ralli quilt design
Course Description
This course is an excellent opportunity to explore how principles of design are transformed into works of art using a variety of skills. Inspired by Sindh’s Ralli quilts, in this course participants will explore the characteristic 4- and 8-fold geometric shapes of this traditional art form, designing stylised nature motifs with different symmetries. They will then produce their own Ralli-inspired piece using fabrics they colour themselves with dyes found in nature, completing several finished sample pieces using a variety of mediums and techniques.

In this five-day introductory course, students will explore traditional dyes and receive an overview of resist techniques used around the world. Techniques will include folding, stitching, and paste resist methods.
Participants will also look at case studies from Pakistan’s rich textile heritage and learn to design motifs using geometry and basic principles of symmetry. They will then apply these principles in a series of resist-dyed samples of their own design, experimenting with indigo and madder dyes to create a wide palette of effects.

GEOMETRY: CURVES & COMPOSITION
Course Description
In this week-long course, students will learn principles of composition and design that can be applied in diverse creative settings including textiles, ceramics, and illumination.
Students will investigate how to compose beautiful biomorphic designs, drawing inspiration from a variety of historical sources. Participants will create their own floral and foliate compositions with techniques such as drop repeats, turnovers, geometric frameworks, and tessellation.
Throughout the course, participants will build a portfolio of visual research and design analysis. Progression drawings and a finished painting of their own original biomorphic composition will form part of this portfolio.
Class members will also contribute to a larger art piece which will be included at an exhibition in the VM Gallery in September 2018.

METHODS AND MATERIALS OF ILLUMINATION
Course Description
For centuries, artists have used gold, ink and brightly coloured paints to illuminate and beautify Islamic manuscripts. In this practical course students will learn traditional paper preparation, including staining, sizing and burnishing the paper. Making watercolour paint using natural pigments will be part of this course. Participants will also learn to make shell gold and learn the usage of ink and practise delicate brush techniques used for this elegant art.
As part of series of courses leading to more complicated designs, floral motives or khatai forms are introduced. By the end of the course participants should have a portfolio of their own khatai designs, have an understanding of the geometry hidden in the manuscripts, and have a finished, painted piece with floral forms.

PAINTED PATTERN: GEOMETRY OF MULTAN
Course Description
Design and paint an original geometric composition inspired by the monuments of Multan. Participants will analyse ceramic and wood pattern elements from several shrines and learn to construct geometric motifs using traditional methods.
In addition, different approaches to achieving beautiful and harmonious colour will be introduced via and each class member will apply what they have learned in a painting of their own design. By the end of the week, each participant will have completed a large, painted geometric design suitable for framing.
Class members will also contribute to a large collaborative composition inspired by the architecture of Multan which will be included at an exhibition in the VM Gallery in September 2018.

INDIGENOUS CERAMIC KASHIKARI TILE
Course Description
In this week-long course, students will learn how to make ceramic kashikari tiles using techniques indigenous to Pakistan. Students will become familiar with all stages of the process: using red clay to form a raw tile, shaping tiles according to geometric principles, white engobe preparation and application, grinding of copper and cobalt oxides, designing and transferring a motif, brush outlining and color filling, and glazing and firing process.
Participants will investigate both geometric and biomorphic patterns from the historic buildings of Pakistan and apply these patterns to their own kashi tiles. Class members will also contribute to a larger art piece which will be included at an exhibition at the VM Gallery in September 2018.
